Responsibility with the Reward of Unconditional Love

By providing veterans and children with service dogs, we will not only boost their confidence, but will also enable them to live a life full of achievement and self-actualization.

We can also arm them with a marketable skill that will allow them to give back to their communities as dog trainers.

MEET MONET Monet was sent to us, with her mother Faith, by Command Control Protection Dogs of Canada to support our newest training programs at the Dream Center in Los Angeles. She is fostered by one of our volunteers until she is old enough to help support our programs.

Canine Companions, LTD has spent the duration of its existence providing and training service dogs for veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). President and Director of Training Walter J. Hart, Jr. has 20 plus years of experience working with and training the service dogs with much success. We have seen the need increase for service dogs and Canine Companions, LTD has expanded its efforts and now looks to open more training facilities with confidence that we will be able to serve those who have so bravely served us and our wonderful country. As a part of the program, Canine Companions, LTD has also taken on the task of training veterans on how to train the dogs themselves. This training helps the veteran regain the confidence needed and desire to function as a productive member of society. Feeling scared and anxious all of the time and having flashbacks at the drop of the smallest traumatic trigger can leave a veteran feeling hopeless and isolated. Being the brave soldiers that they are, asking for help with these feelings can be hard. This program offers the veteran an opportunity to help their fellow veteran in understanding that they are not alone and that it is okay to ask for help to overcome the challenges that were inflicted on them as a result of defending their country.

Canine Companions, LTD has decided to launch a new program to provide service dogs to children who struggle with the challenges of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2020), ASD “is a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication, and behavioral challenges”. Having a service dog can help those who are experiencing these challenges. Canine Companions, LTD is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that employs skilled trainers to train dogs that are matched to meet the needs of the child. Canine Companions, LTD recognizes that each Autistic child is unique in their own way and each child will have different needs. Special care is taken to ensure that as many details as possible are collected about the child and their family in an effort to understand the child’s individual needs. The trainers train the dogs for the specific needs of each individual Autistic child and works with the child and their family to create a lasting and successful bond between child and dog.

MEET THE FOUNDER

Walter James Hart, Jr. is the founder and president of Canine Companions, Ltd. Walter is an entrepreneur and owner of Hart’s Dog Training, Inc. since 1987. Walter founded the nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization to apply his many skills and talents to meet needs of the community through canine support with integrity and compassion. As a professional canine trainer Walter not only loves animals, but also loves giving them a purpose to meet specialized needs within the community. Walter has focused on the elderly, the disabled and the veteran community. Inspired by his grandfather, a stroke victim, he founded Canine Companions, Ltd. The intention of this program is to train canines to be companion assistants, protectors, and service dogs to elderly, paraplegic, trauma victims, sight-impaired, hearing-impaired and other special needs humans who may not be able to afford these exclusive animals otherwise. Canine Companions, Ltd. is presently creating lasting change for communities in four states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan and California. Walter was born in Gastonia, North Carolina and grew up in Detroit. He is a graduate of northwest Detroit’s school, Henry Ford High School, and later attended Southern University and Central Michigan University. Walter thrives on challenges and has overcome many adversities in his life. He finds passion and purpose in giving dogs and people a second chance. He brings with him a sense of community, and a desire to make an impact as a public servant. Walter has been endorsed by a wide range of organizations throughout the course of his career servicing community members in need. These organizations include: the Phoenix and Los Angeles Dream Centers, Agape International Spiritual Center, Pinal County Animal Care and Control, and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.
